:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Expat -- Very good reading : It would be base and disingenuous to give this novel, generally considered Gissing's masterpiece, anything but the very highest score. The interest is kept up throughout with lively dialogue, incisive characterization, and judiciously sprinkled doses of suspense for the characters' fate. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from reading man -- Gissing's Masterpiece? : This is generally regarded as George Gissing's best novel. It certainly is a great novel, but what needs to be said is that Gissing wrote at least three great novels, all of which could stand as his "masterpiece". - 5.0 out of 5 stars from propertius -- An Olympian View Of A World Since Past : Some great writers, occasionally write just good books and some good writers are wont to write great books. New Grub Street is a great book. Note that I do not say a great "read" but specifically a book. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alexander Kobulnicky -- Blank misery : New Grub Street is a novel about writers -- nearly every character is a writer or a near relation -- but apart from a few brief cameos, there isn't an established writer in the entire book. Instead, some are formerly successful authors unable to adapt to the literary climate of the 1880's, exemplified by Edwin Reardon, and some are modern men who are destined to thrive in this modern world, like Jasper Milvain. Gissing tracks their different paths through the marketplace, and the inevitable outcome. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Tom Williams -- Flawed but strongly recommended : 'New Grub Street' was written by George Gissing, a jobbing writer of his day, little appreciated for most of his life and largely forgotten now. The story tells the life of Edmund Reardon, a writer who, after one reasonably successful novel, is on the road to obscurity. The parallels between author and protagonist are so marked that the story often reads less like a novel than a memoir. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 13, 2018 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tufnell Paul -- Second Division : Some people regard this as one of the classics of English literature. For me, it shows the distance between the very best - Austen, Eliot, Conrad, etc. - and the next best. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from SW -- Fresh and startling : A gripping read, tackling a dilemma that seems as real today as it was a century ago. What are promising young artists who find themselves on their uppers to do? If, in order to keep family, body and soul together, they 'sell out' and produce poor work that sells, are they waving goodbye to their integrity? If, beset by anxiety, they fail, are they letting down their promise and those who had faith in them? Is plodding on into destitution really the honourable course or is it deluded? Gissing shows us with wonderful acuity what it is like to be a struggling artist, and what it is like to live with one - and also how, out of poverty the seeds of corruption, breakdown and despair set in. But don't worry, this is not a gloomy book. In anatomising a range of characters whose circumstances and choices vary, he makes all come alive on the page, and we feel compassion for every one, even the hilariously worldly and the angrily disappointed. This is a book by someone who knew how pitiless the world of the young writer could be, and I'm amazed that I've only just discovered it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2013 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from D.H.R.Brace -- Absolute nonsense. I would give it a negative star rating for wasting my time and money : I do not understand where the text came from. It refers to an e-book, and gives an explanation of it. This is obviously nonsense as the book was written in the 19th century, long before computers were dreamt of. I struggled through about 4% of the book which had many other nonsensical sentences, and gave up when it referred to an oak (tree) as oK. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from August Kramer -- Gissing's most memorable novel and still relevant to this day : My favourite Gissing novel. It is something you can read over and over again. He pretty much captures the literary world of Victorian London in a nutshell. Now I am going try out The Selected Stories of Morley Roberts, which I notice have just been published by Victorian Secrets (June 2015) and promises to be very interesting, as he was Gissing's best friend and wrote a controversial biography about him. New Grub Street contrasts the career of Edwin Reardon, a gifted but impoverished author of proven literary merit, with that of Jasper Milvain, a materially successful reviewer and literary hack.
