:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from mtn gurl -- wonderful story! : I just started reading this book. I knew Terry Thorsen when I was a kid in Arlington. He was a little older. I did not know he had served in Viet Nam, I very much appreciate his service. Then years later I worked at APD but never got the chance to say hello. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from John R. Saylor -- Brothers in Arms : Finished the book in 2 days. I served with Terry in 1968-69 though as an unlisted man. I was actually with the men loading the various ordnance stores Terry used in practice and in the war effort in Viet Nam. His story was a reawakening of long dormant memories and events thrilling and frightening. Each page in every chapter I was there and he brought to life experiences, those feelings as real as if we were there again. Most readers will not appreciate the descriptions of events as deeply. But it is an exciting read just the same. I also feel very blessed to have returned home unharmed having proudly served my country. I served with VMFA 314 from February to September at Chu Lai as a Sergeant in Radar and Ordinance. Prior to and after, I was with VMFA 531 at El Toro. Later, I went home and finished college, went through OCS and retired as a Major in 1990. I shared many of his feelings about OCS - not the most fun part of my life. Drank too much coffee and smoked too many cigarettes while going through the UW in 3 years - kicked my rear. Hated those forced marches and graduated with pneumonia It was very interesting to hear his perspective from the back seat. I knew some of our RIOs but they did not always share the intensity of their missions. We lost two aircraft while I was there and no crew. Worked with some really smart guys, mostly with quite a bit of college behind them. Many were sharper than our RIOs. A few were not. Our OIC was 1st Lt Skelton who was a fantastic guy. I saw the author's squadron leave for Nam and we took over their enlisted barracks. Had a few friends in their Radar Shop. When we pulled out, we were split up and I ended up working with classified material at Iwakuni in the Wing Headquarters. It was a beautiful place and later I had a short tour there as an officer in MWCS18. His flight descriptions had me grabbing my seat. Incoming rockets were nerve racking. He lived a bit better that I did with AC and a nicer club. We had the Sergeant's Club which was lively. I was fortunate - the officers, from the CO on down were fantastic and appreciated us. I ran it a few idiots in Iwakuni and beyond but they were the exceptions. Lost a few hours of sleep going back to Chulai with this book; it is that good. We also had an experience with our barber. He tried to go through the wire with a satchel charge and my friend Tom Cox shot him. A few minor things. Maggie' drawers are a red flag we flash from the butts when a shooter misses the target. Enlisted generally enlist, officers get a commission. Wish there was a little less detail about his sour relationship with his wife and if the names were real, I am not sure some of the officers would like the details of their short comings listed. Really enjoyed this book. Great job and I am sure reliving some of the details was painful. Thanks for sharing and for your bravery Marine! ( Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2020 )
